What PSI to pressure wash a car

For a car, the nozzle and the distance matter more than the PSI. Any home electric washer rated around 1,500 to 2,000 PSI is enough, as long as you use the widest tip (40 degree, often white) or a foam nozzle and keep your distance. Kärcher's car guide says to use a low to medium pressure setting and stay 8 to 12 inches from the paint and 12 to 18 inches from the tires.

Why more pressure does not help here

Car dirt is loose grit and road film. You want enough water to float it off, then soap to lift the film. More force does not clean paint faster. It just raises the odds of lifting a chip, a decal or a rubber seal. That is why the light duty band on our calculator, under 2,000 cleaning units, lists cars first.

Every one of these is enough for a car. The difference is how many other jobs each one can also take on.

A simple order of work

1. Rinse from the top down with the 40 degree tip, starting further back than you think you need and moving in slowly.
2. Foam or soap the car with the soap tip or a foam cannon. Use a car wash soap made for pressure washers.
3. Let it sit a few minutes, but not long enough to dry in the sun.
4. Use a soft wash mitt on the worst spots, then rinse top down again.

Keep the spray off these

• Chipped paint and stone chips, since water can get under the edge.
• Decals, badges and window tint edges.
• Door and window rubber seals at close range.
• Tire sidewalls up close. Kärcher's guide says 12 to 18 inches from tires.
• The engine bay, unless your owner's manual says it is fine.
